Why these institutions exist.
Some problems are bigger than any one country: war, financial crisis, pandemics, climate, poverty. From 1944 onward, countries built shared institutions to handle them together. Doing things together, by agreed rules, is what multilateral means. Doing them one country to another is bilateral.
